How to look after a boiler
Your boiler is one of the most important things in your home. Here are a few things you can do to try make sure it’s working when you need it.
Your boiler is one of the most essential pieces of equipment in your home. That's why it's important to have it serviced annually and carry out some simple checks between services.
Don't just think about your boiler in Winter. It's never too early to think about your boiler, even in the summer months when you'll likely use it less. That way you know it's in good shape to get you through those colder days.
Step one
Check your boiler is working at least once a week. It’s important to check it even in the summer months, ahead of the cold weather coming back. If it’s not working, report a repair as soon as you can.
Step two
If you have a pay as you go gas or electricity meter, try to make sure you have plenty of credit on it in case it gets cold quickly. If your gas or electricity won’t come on, remember to check you’re definitely in credit before you report a repair.
Step three
Be aware of gas safety checks. We perform gas safety checks once a year, which can help us spot any problems with your boiler. These checks are really important to keep you safe and legally we have to perform them. Bear in mind that we’ll need to be able to access your home in order to perform the check. You can expect to receive a letter 12 weeks before these checks are due with more information. Find out more about gas safety.
As well as maintaining your boiler, we want to do all we can to help save you money.
We're keen to ensure all customers know how to use their heating systems efficiently. A few things you can do to help reduce the costs are:
- Turn your boiler temperature down
- Use thermostatic radiator valves (if you have them)
- Use your boiler time clock
- Bleed your radiators
You can find more tips on the Government's Help for Households campaign website.
Annual servicing of your boiler helps to make your heating system more effective.
Our engineers will explain how your heating controls work as part of your annual service. They'll also help make system adjustments if you'd like us to. There may come a time when you need a new heating system. If so, our installers will explain how your new heating system works before leaving your home.
