Electrical safety
As part of our service to you, we’ll carry out a full electrical safety check in your home every five years. But there are also things you can do to protect your home from the dangers of electricity.
Electrical safety check
- If you are a new customer, we will complete your electrical inspection before you move into your new home. We will provide you with a copy of the electrical report before you move in
- If you are an existing customer, we will complete your electrical inspection at least every five years. We keep a record of checks and will get in touch with you to let you know when you're due the next one
As part of the inspection, we will repair or make safe any electrical hazards that we find during the inspection. This includes looking at your wiring, fuse board and electrical system to ensure they are in safe, working condition. We'll also check your fire and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they're up to date and working correctly.
If any additional work is required, then we'll aim to complete it within 28 days of the inspection date. The electrician will make this appointment with you during their visit. It will usually be within seven days of the initial inspection.
It’s important you allow us access, but if this is not possible, we will make another appointment soon after. It’s important we carry out inspections, so please try and be at home for the appointment or let us know if you need to change it.
Starting in May 2026, we will also provide a copy of the electrical report within 28 days of the inspection date. This will arrive by post and will include a letter that explains the outcome of your inspection. It will also include details of any additional work that we need to carry out. The electrician will explain this on the day of the inspection, so you’ll know what to expect.
Electrical appliances provided as part of your tenancy: what Home Group must do
We do not usually provide electrical appliances such as ovens, fridges and kettles as part of your tenancy. However, if we do we will check these annually to ensure they continue to be safe and operate as they should.
If you have appliances we provide as part of your tenancy, and these are not being checked by us then please get in touch.
If you are a new customer and we have provided electrical appliances as part of your tenancy, we will give you a copy of the most recent report before you move in.
Electrical safety precautions
The number one cause of electrical problems at home is the misuse of electrical equipment. Keep an eye on your appliances on a day-to-day basis and immediately stop using anything that looks damaged.
You don’t need to be an electrician to do basic checks - checking the wires, keeping them away from water and not overloading sockets are simple things you can do in your home to keep things safe.
Follow our top tips to avoid dangers in your home:
- Turn off electrical appliances when you’ve finished using them
- Check cables - if anything looks worn or loose, don’t use the item
- Don’t let the leads from your kettle, toaster or other kitchen appliances trail across your cooker
- Test your smoke alarm regularly, just in case there’s an electrical fire
- Never use a bulb with a higher wattage than the light fitting says is safe
- Don’t run the cables from your appliances under carpets or rugs
- Never overload your sockets or adapters by plugging too many appliances into one place
- Defrost your fridge and freezer at least once a year
- Don’t leave your washing machine or tumble dryer on when you’re out of the house or overnight
- Check that your microwaves, fridges and freezers have enough space around them
- Never use water to put out an electrical fire. Visit our fire safety page for more information
Warning signs that something is wrong include:
- Sparks, burning smells, or overheating sockets
- Broken sockets and switches
- Electric shocks, no matter how mild
- Trip switches at the electric consumer unit/fuse board keep tripping
If you notice any of the above, then call us on 0345 141 4663 straight away and don’t use your sockets until we’ve checked them over.

Register your appliances for added safety
For extra peace of mind, it’s also a good idea to register your electrical appliances with the manufacturer. This will allow you to check for product recalls or safety repairs.
The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDA) is the biggest UK trade association that represents over 85% of all small and large domestic appliances sold in the UK. They keep a database of all registered appliances so that the firms can contact you quickly if they really need to. You can register your appliances online.
