Calling on a wide range of experience, among various roles, John is pro chancellor to pro rector at Brunel University.
John was also formerly the director-general of the CBI and is a founding commissioner of the Low Pay Commission, which established the National Minimum Wage.

He was an independent reviewer of the State Pension Age from 2016 to 17, setting the age at 68 from 2039, and a member of the 2018 review of the financial reporting council and the 2019 review of HS2. From 2015 to 2021, he was chairman of transport for the North and a visiting professor at University College London. 

He was also on the ACAS Council, vice chairman of the Learning and Skills Council, chairman of the World Skills UK Skills Task Force, a UK commissioner for Employment and Skills, president of the Northern Transport Acceleration Council, and a board member of OFSTED from 2016 to 2022. 

John was awarded a CBE in 2006 for his services to business.
