Holmlea Primary School, Glasgow
Preserving and protecting our heritage is important to so many of us, but conservation and restoration projects can be very costly and complex, with unforeseen problems often arising along the way. Rising to the challenge, Home Group saw beyond the many potential pitfalls presented by Holmlea Primary School and its listed buildings, with an inspirational plan to lead the way in transformational conservation and urban regeneration.
The iconic restoration project includes the school itself - a traditional red sandstone grade B listed building - the neighbouring janitor’s house, also listed, and new homes within the former school playground. All have been sympathetically restored and developed to provide 49 highly aspirational, sought after and much needed homes for affordable rent.
The development also comprises a new build element which complements the existing Victorian school building. This, along with attractive landscaping features and the retention of original trees, has resulted in a stunning and attractive place to live.
Careful consideration has been given to sympathetically blend the old with the new, using contemporary finished and stylish design to complement and retain the charm and character of the existing building. Beautiful features such as the attractive exterior railings will be restored to their former colourful glory, whilst tastefully landscaped grounds will create a pleasant shared communal space for people to enjoy the outdoors.
