How to standout when applying for our apprenticeships

Applying for any job can be nerve wracking. But with a little preparation, you'll feel confident and give the best impression of yourself. And remember, everyone wants you to do your best. So, relax and follow our tips on how to shine during the application process

It’s also important to remember, this is your opportunity to make sure the organisation fits within your values. And that they will support your development as an apprentice.

  • Tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for. If you share skills or characteristics mentioned in the job description add them to your CV.
  • Don't be afraid to show a little personality in your CV. An easy way to do it is to add your hobbies and interests.
  • Research the company’s social media accounts and website. Find out what values they hold, what products and services they offer. What their history is and anything significant that you can drop into the interview.
  • Do a test run of questions you might be asked. Also, think of questions you don’t want to be asked so you’re prepared in case they do ask them.
  • Think of a question to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview. My favourite is to always ask why they enjoy working for the company.
  • If you’re asked a question, you don’t know the answer to or don’t have experience in, don’t panic! Explain this to the interviewer and talk about a similar experience. You can even ask them to explain more in-depth about the topic because you'd love to learn more.
  • My last piece of advice would be to be yourself. And to remember that an interview is there for you to see if you’d like to work for an organisation. If they're not ticking all your boxes or the role isn’t for you then that’s completely okay.

Keep positive. Every interview is an opportunity to add a string to your bow and gives you a chance to meet new people in your field. If it doesn't work out perhaps it wasn't meant to be, and there is something more suited to your talents out there.
