A new ‘extra care’ scheme has launched in Leeds, providing safe and affordable housing to people over 55 while supporting them to maintain their independence.

The Sycamores, located in Woodlesford, follows on from previous extra care schemes delivered by Home Group in the city and builds on the city council’s ambitions to improve independent living options for older people across the city.

The new scheme includes 15 two-bed and 47 one-bed apartments, all provided as affordable rent options.

An official opening ceremony was held earlier this month, attended by key partners from the consortium, welcoming new customers into their homes with resident Lynne proudly cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

These apartments have been specially designed to ensure they provide a safe home and access to 24-hour emergency support for residents, while still maintaining the feeling of independent living and combatting common challenges faced by older customers such as social isolation.

The on-site care team offer personalised, planned support with a reablement focus for those who need it, and peace of mind for all residents and their families.

One of the key ways this has been done is through community integration, with spaces open to the public, like a café and salon, being supported on site to ensure residents are not left cut off from their local community.

There is also a guest suite on site to encourage family and friends to be able to visit.

Katherine Hernandez, Regional Director at Home Group said: “It is brilliant to open The Sycamores. This extra care scheme will provide really important independent living opportunities to our older residents across Leeds, in a way which is safe and supported.

“We’re delighted to be working closely with partners and Leeds City Council on schemes like this, and to see support from local MPs too.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring there is adequate and meaningful living opportunities available to all residents across Leeds, and we know safe, independent living for older customers like The Sycamores can make a big difference in people’s lives.”

Teresa Snaith, Development Director of Lovell Later Living, added: “The difference we can make to older people’s lives through the development of great places to live and age well in, drives our business core values.

“We strive to continue creating solutions for people in later life and our Partnership with Home Group and Leeds City Council has enabled another community in this wonderful city to have extra care services right at its heart, supporting not only these wonderful residents who I’ve had the privilege of meeting, but also reaching out to all those living locally too.

“We hope all residents live their best lives in this beautiful scheme and we look forward to continuing to develop more schemes such as the Sycamores via partnerships and other age-appropriate housing in the future.”

Simon Lightwood MP said: "It was great to be at the opening of The Sycamores today. Being able to live independently - but safely - is so vital to the wellbeing of many older people.

"As many people seek alternatives to full-time residential care, its great to see Leeds City Council and Home Group investing into the health and welfare of our communities.

"I'm looking forward to coming back and visiting the cafe!"
