Home revamps to bring people savings at just the right time

Housing association Home in Scotland is to undertake its first major retrofit programme.

The aim of the works, to be carried out in Dundee, is to make customers’ homes more energy efficient, as well as bring significant savings to their bills.

The pilot, which will involve retrofitting a block of 14 flats in the city, expects to take the homes from EPC ratings C and D to a B rating – a perceived small change but one which will be hugely important for customers’ homes, and pockets - especially as we edge towards winter.

Retrofitting is the process of making improvements to a home so it becomes more energy efficient with lower emissions. It’s work that will assist in some way to helping the Scottish Government reach its net zero target. 

Among the works being carried are the installation of external wall insulation: cavity wall insulation; triple-glazed windows and insulated doors; loft insulation top-up; solar panel installation; replacement heating system, ventilation improvements and the installation of monitoring equipment to record energy consumption, internal temperature, air quality and CO2 levels.

The work is being partly funded by the Scottish Government’s Social Housing Net Zero Heat Fund. Home in Scotland successfully bid for close to £500,000 in funding.

Bryony Willett, Director of Home in Scotland, said: “We are all excited about this new pilot, as we expect it to create a successful blueprint as we plan for wider and more extensive retrofits across Scotland in the future.

“Moreover, the benefits it will bring to our customers’ in Dundee will be tangible, which I’m sure will be welcome news to them. They should see significant savings on their energy bills, but also have a safe warm home.

“The level and quality of work being undertaken will ensure our customers’ homes are fit for purpose for many years to come.”

Work on the flats began in mid-November and is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
