Plans for much needed housing for young couples and families in the centre of Chichester have been approved.
The green light has been given to turn an unused building in the centre of town into affordable homes.
Chichester District Council has given housing association Home Group permission to convert a building which once housed vulnerable people into 23 homes for young couples and families.
The three-storey building on Velyn Avenue, which was known as Chichester Foyer, has not been used since 2017.
Now, it will be remodelled to provide 14 one-bedroom and nine two-bedroom homes, with open plan kitchen and living room spaces.
The plans were welcomed by the local authority, who acknowledged the ‘acute’ need for housing of this size in the centre of Chichester.
Craig Ellis, Senior Regeneration Manager at Home Group, said: “We’re really pleased to have had our plans approved as we, like the council, know how great the need is for homes like these in the centre of Chichester.
“Our focus is on making sure we deliver the right homes in the right places, and this is another example of this.
“We’re now exploring the possibility of being able to deliver these properties sooner than planned, by utilising the new Homes England Social, Affordable Homes programme.”
