Much needed homes being delivered for local people

A ceremonial sod-breaking event has signalled work on over 100 new homes on the outskirts of Carlise.
The much-needed homes will be built on Burgh Road and will be called Waverley Gardens.
The 114 property development includes 68 much needed social rent homes and 46 available for shared ownership. The social homes are specifically for local people and come with the local occupancy provisions.
Work is now underway on the 2, 3 and 4 bedroomed properties, which are being delivered by Home Group.
The launch of the development, which is being part funded by Homes England, was attended by Carlisle MP Julie Minns and ward councillor for Belle Vue, Abdul Harid.
Lisa Russell, Regional Director for the North-West at Home Group, said: “We are delighted to be delivering more much needed homes around Carlisle – especially the social homes, which are solely for local people.
“We have over 10,000 homes across Cumberland and Westmoreland Furness and we have plans to deliver more homes over the next few years, cementing our presence in these areas, where we’ve been since 1936.”
MP Julie Minns, said: "We all need a roof over our heads, which is why the Government is committed to delivering 1.5 million new homes over the current Parliament.
“But not everyone can afford to buy outright. This scheme offers a mix of homes to rent and others to buy under a shared-ownership model, which provides a lower-cost route to home ownership.
“All are affordable and all are for local people. This development is exactly what Carlisle needs. I applaud Home Group for bringing it forward and I’m delighted the Government is helping to fund it through Homes England.”
Councillor Harid, said: “This is a very welcome development for our ward and a significant investment in the future of our community. Residents have consistently raised the need for quality housing that allows people to stay within the area.
“This site has long been recognised as having potential, and it is encouraging to now see tangible progress being made. The construction phase will also bring opportunities for local employment and support the wider economy, which is especially important in the current climate.”
Home Group has assigned local firm Atkinson Building Contractor to build the homes, ensuring local firms and workers benefit from the development. The homes are expected to be fully completed by 2029, with people starting to move in by summer 2027.
