A brownfield site in Appleby has been turned into much needed affordable housing in the area.

Housing provider Home Group have turned a disused car park into 24 homes to meet demand from local residents.

They have provided 16 two and three bedroom homes for social rent and eight two and three bedroom properties under their shared ownership scheme.

All but one of the homes are now occupied, having been completed towards the end of 2025.

The homes are fitted with air source heat pumps and solar panels, making them extremely energy efficient, which will have a positive effect for peoples’ energy costs.

The scheme was the first development Home Group had undertaken under the nutrient neutrality planning restrictions, which requires new developments to demonstrate that they will not cause a net increase in nutrient pollution (nitrogen or phosphorus) into protected, sensitive areas. Home Group purchased land to offset nutrient pollution.

The whole project was supported by the local community.
