How we retrofit your home
Find out how we retrofit a home, from start to finish.
Which homes are eligible for retrofit?
We are retrofitting homes in different phases. We started our retrofit programme in 2021. It will take us time to identify the homes eligible for retrofit, and time to complete the works.
The programme will focus on homes:
- In England that have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D or below
- In Scotland that have an Energy Performance Certificate rating of C or below
If your home is eligible, we will get in touch with you.
Surveying your home
Once we know your home is eligible, we will introduce you to one of our colleagues. They will be your point of contact throughout the retrofit process.
The first thing we need to do to start the process of retrofitting your home is to carry out some surveys. We will measure:
- The current energy performance of your home
- The general condition of existing features (your heating system, windows, loft insulation and how air tight your home is)
This doesn’t take a long time, we just need you to allow us access to your home for the appointments.
Designing your retrofit solution
The survey results will tell us what kind of retrofit solution will work for your home and improve your homes energy efficiency rating.
The retrofit solution will be based on:
- The age of your home
- The size of your home
- How many people live in your home
Because every home is different, the measures for each home differ too. Your home may only need one measure, or a range. In some cases, measures could be restricted due to the location of your home e.g we may need to apply for planning permission.
We will talk you through the measures, the process and timescales of the improvement works.
Because we are working with funding that is only available for a specific period of time, we will work quickly. However, we will agree timings with you and you will be kept informed at every stage.
Carrying out the retrofit works
The works will be carried out by one of our approved contractors who are TrustMark registered. They are experienced in energy efficiency technology.
Overall, it takes around 14 weeks to retrofit a home. We will create a programme for you which will tell you which days we need access to your home, and what will happen on each day. We won’t need access to your home each day of the 14 weeks. Depending on the contractors who work on your home, the works might be carried out over winter.
You can choose to go out whilst the contractor is working, or you can stay at home; it’s up to you.
The contractor will show you how to use any new systems, like heating or ventilation if you have had those installed.
Once the contractor has completed installing the measures, they will book appointments with you directly to complete any minor follow up works needed.
I recommend every customer just does it, it's a no-brainer It'll save you money and energy.

Re-surveying your home
We will need to survey your home again after the works are finished. This is to produce a new EPC certificate and to check how air tight your home is.
To make sure that the new measures are delivering as we expect them to, we may carry out more monitoring and evaluation with your permission.
Keeping in touch
Once the work is all complete, we will contact you to see how your new retrofit measures are working and to make sure you are happy.
