We understand that the festive season can be a busy time for many people and fire safety might not be at the top of your list of things to consider. However, now is a time when the number of fire hazards in your homes can increase and we want to share with you some tips to help keep you, your family, and neighbours safe.
Christmas Trees
If you're using a real tree, make sure it is fresh with green needles that do not fall off easily, and make sure to water the tree daily.
Keep trees at least three feet away from heat sources such as radiators, fireplaces, or candles.
Decorations
Many decorations are made from flammable materials such as tissue paper, cardboard, and wood. They can burn easily, so do not attach them to lights or heaters.
Only use lights and extension cords rated for outdoor use if decorating outside and ones rated for indoor use inside. Check your lights carry the British Safety Standard sign.
Also, check your lights for frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections before use, and always turn them off before going to bed or leaving the house.
Candles
Keep candles away from flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets. Never leave candles unattended.
You could also consider using flameless LED candles for the same ambiance without the risk.
Plug sockets
Overloading sockets is always dangerous, but the holidays tend to involve a lot of items that need to be plugged in. Only use one extension lead per socket and never plug an extension lead into another.
Check the wattage of each appliance and use a multiway bar extension rather than a block adaptor.
Check sockets regularly for changes, overheating, or burn marks.
Fireplaces
Avoid hanging flammable decorations above an active fireplace and use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
Cooking
Never leave cooking food unattended on the stove or in the oven.
Keep dish towels, pot holders, and decorations away from open flames or burners.
Smoke Alarms
Test your alarm regularly by pressing the test button. If it is faulty, call us on 0345 141 4663.

Enjoy a safe and happy holiday by staying vigilant and taking these precautions.
