The small change challenge - start small, save big

Mark Calvert, financial inclusion manager
Saving money can feel daunting, especially when budgets are tight. But the truth is, you don’t need to make big sacrifices to start saving - small, consistent steps can make a big difference over time.
That’s where the small change challenge comes in. Over just 10 weeks, you’ll build a simple savings habit that’s easy to stick to and rewarding to complete. By the end, you’ll have a savings pot of £55.
More importantly, a stronger sense of confidence and control over your money.
How it works
The idea is simple. Each week, you save a little more than the week before.
| Week | Amount to save |
| Week 1 | £1 |
| Week 2 | £2 |
| Week 3 | £3 |
| Week 4 | £4 |
| Week 5 | £5 |
| Week 6 | £6 |
| Week 7 | £7 |
| Week 8 | £8 |
| Week 9 | £9 |
| Week 10 | £10 |
Each week, simply add £1 more than the previous week. By week 10, you’ll have saved a total of £55.
And if you need to pause, repeat a week, or take it slower - that’s perfectly okay. The goal is progress.
Top tips for success
- Keep it separate: Use a jar, envelope, or separate savings account so you’re not tempted to dip in.
- Make it visible: Seeing your savings grow can boost your motivation - tick off each week as you go.
- Pair it with a goal: Whether it’s a family day out, a Christmas fund, or an emergency fund, having a reason to save helps keep you on track.
- Get others involved: Challenge a friend, family member, or colleague to join you - it’s more fun when you do it together.
Why it works
Saving small amounts builds momentum. It’s achievable, sustainable, and helps shift your mindset from “I can’t save” to “I am saving.”
So why not start this week? You might be surprised at how quickly small bits of change add up.
