Stay safe around bonfire night

Jake Brett, digital content executive
Setting off fireworks or having a bonfire at this time of year is something many of us look forward to with family and friends.
We've put together some quick tips to help you stay safe if you decide to have your own fireworks or bonfire display.
Safety advice
- Keep fireworks in a cool, dry place before use
- Only ever use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings, trees, and anything flammable. Be wary of any powerlines that may be overhead
- Spectators need to be at least 15-20 meters away from a bonfire or where fireworks are being lit
- Make sure pets are kept indoors
- Prepare a stable area of ground to set off fireworks and keep a bucket of water close by for an emergency
- Follow the instructions on the firework carefully and only set off one at a time, moving back quickly. Never go back to relight a dud as it could still explode
- Supervise children using sparklers. Make sure they are wearing gloves
- Never throw fireworks or sparklers on bonfires, regardless of whether they are used or not
- Soak all used fireworks and any duds in water, place in a bag and dispose of in your litter bin
- Never use flammable liquids to ignite bonfires and avoid lighting in high winds
- Only use untreated wood and paper-based materials. Never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam furniture, or batteries. This reduces the emission of harmful smoke
Environmental considerations
From disgruntled neighbours to traumatised pets – think about the effects of fireworks on those around you.
- Fireworks can be severely distressing for pets. Consider low noise options that are now readily available.
- Be mindful of your neighbours, especially elderly people and those with young children. Let them know in advance if you are planning a display.
- Be careful to dispose of any litter after using fireworks.
Fireworks can be great fun – by following these steps, you can reduce the risk of accidents and enjoy making memories!
