School’s out: simple ways to keep kids busy this summer (without breaking the bank)

The summer holidays are here and if you’re a parent or carer, you’ll know it can bring a familiar question: how do I keep the kids busy without spending a fortune?

The good news is you don’t need big budgets or packed itineraries to make the most of summer. A few simple ideas can go a long way, and often it’s the small moments that stick.

We've put together some easy, low-cost ways to keep children entertained over the holidays.

Make the most of what’s on your doorstep

You don’t have to travel far to find something different. Local parks, green spaces and community areas can feel like a brand-new adventure to kids.

Try:

  • Nature walks or mini scavenger hunts
  • Picnics in the park (even a simple one feels like a treat)
  • Feeding ducks or spotting wildlife

Get creative at home

You don’t need a cupboard full of supplies to get stuck into crafts. Simple activities can keep children engaged for hours.

A few ideas:

  • Drawing or painting competitions
  • Building dens with blankets and cushions
  • Recycling projects using boxes and old packaging

Let kids take the lead where they can; it builds confidence and keeps things fun.

Look out for free local activities

Libraries, community centres and local organisations often run free or low-cost sessions during the holidays. You can find your local library on the gov.uk website.

These might include:

  • Storytime sessions
  • Craft workshops
  • Sports or play activities

It’s worth checking what’s happening in your local area, it’s easy and a great way for kids to meet others and try something new.

Most importantly, don’t feel like you need to fill every hour or spend lots of money. Summer doesn’t have to be busy to be meaningful. Some of the best days are the simplest ones, a walk, a game, or time together at home.
