Meet our customer apprentice Ruth

Aimee Cavener

Aimee Cavener, marketing adviser

Ruth joined us as a community host in 2022. Ruth worked with Smart Works who supported her to get interview ready.

Smart Works is a UK charity that gives women the confidence they need to reach their full potential, secure employment and change the trajectory of their lives.

Can you tell us a bit about your interview preparation?
"My previous support workers told me that Home Group has apprenticeships. They thought it may be a route to take to build my confidence, meet new people and try something different. They helped me decide on the host role. Shortly after I submitted my application, I was given an interview date! Then I attended a workshop with Smart Works. This quickly turned into interview coaching and dress fitting. It had been a while since I had an interview, so this was much needed! The coaching is well thought out and the tips really helped as I was so nervous. Smart Works made sure I had an outfit and a pop card with £20 on it to cover transport for the interview.

What is it like being a Home Group customer and colleague?
"It is interesting to be both. The way I look at it if I was never a customer, I would not have had the opportunity or even known about Home Group! It is also informative to experience both sides, but more to understand how Home Group works.

Can you tell us a little bit about your role?
"As a community host no single day is the same! This is what I love about this role. From hosting to helping colleagues, prepping rooms for functions, and studying and making colleagues smile. Plus, I clock so many steps each day, the most so far is 18,000!

And how about your Apprenticeship qualification?
"I love that I am learning about Home Group whilst working towards a Customer Service Level 2 qualification. All the work is based on Home Group and my role. It is helping me develop personally and professionally.

What advice would you give to other customers thinking of applying for a role with Home Group?
"Do it! Especially if there is an area you are interested in learning more about. There are so many different departments in Home Group. You cannot fail to find something that suits you.

What are your hopes for the future?
"I really hope to get a permanent role as a community host. I love the role as it is more of a physical one. I love my team as everyone is so helpful, different and easygoing.
