Gardening in small spaces this Spring

Hannah Hanson, senior marketing executive
As the weather starts to improve, spring is a great time to enjoy gardening at home.
Even if you don’t have a garden, there are still plenty of easy ways to grow plants in small spaces. We’ve put together a few simple tips to help you get started.
Make the most of small spaces
You don’t always need a garden to enjoy gardening. Balconies, doorsteps, patios and windowsills can all be used to grow plants. Pots, tubs, and hanging baskets work well and can be moved to catch the sun. They’re perfect for adding colour outside your home and don’t take up too much floor space.
Choose easy plants
Spring is a great time to grow plants that don’t need much care. Hardy flowers like pansies, primroses, and daffodils grow well in cooler, spring weather and brighten up outdoor spaces.
Herbs such as basil, mint and parsley are easy to grow in pots and are useful for cooking. If you’d like to grow vegetables, lettuce or spring onions are good choices for containers and grow fairly quickly.
Keep it simple
Most plants will grow well in containers as long as they have drainage holes at the bottom. This helps prevent water from building up and the roots from rotting. Old buckets, food tubs or storage boxes can work well if you add a few small holes in the bottom and use compost.
Small‑space gardening doesn’t need to take up much time. Water plants regularly, especially as the weather warms up, and remove any dead leaves to help plants stay healthy.
Enjoy shared spaces
If you don’t have space at home, you could visit a local community garden. These shared spaces are often free to use and are a great way to spend time outdoors and meet people in your area.
Gardening doesn’t need to be complicated. Starting with just a few pots can make a big difference and help you enjoy the spring season.
Some recommendations may not apply to every development, so please always check the rules and lease conditions for your specific site.
Find your local community garden
The Good to Grow network has a map to help you find local commuity gardens near you that might be looking for volunteers. You can find out more on their website.
