Coughs, colds and flu: What you need to know this winter

Hannah Hanson, senior marketing executive
You’ve probably noticed more people coughing and sneezing around you as the colder months roll in, but how do you know if it's more than just a cold?
And how can you protect yourself from the worst winter illnesses?
Here is what you need to know, plus some practical tips to help you stay well this winter.
Cold, flu or Covid – What’s the difference?
Symptoms can often look similar, but here are some clues on how you can tell illnesses apart.
- Cold: Begins gradually, mostly affects your nose and throat, and might cause a chesty cough.
- Flu: Starts suddenly and often leaves you wiped out with a fever, muscle aches and exhaustion.
- Covid: Similar to flu, but can also include loss of taste or smell, upset stomach and sometimes a sharp, sore throat.
If you aren’t sure, take it easy and rest up! If symptoms persist for more than three weeks or if you have an underlying health condition, seek professional advice.
Top tips to feel better
Paracetamol or ibuprofen
Over-the-counter painkillers are helpful to ease pain and fever - ensure you are taking the recommended amount.
Vitamin D
The NHS recommends vitamin D supplements in the Winter months when daylight hours are reduced.
Stay hydrated
Warm drinks and food such as soup can also help to soothe symptoms.
Decongestant sprays
These are available over the counter and can help with blocked noses. Make sure you use them sparingly and for no more than 4-5 days to avoid further congestion.
Don’t forget your flu jab!
The flu vaccine is one of the best ways to protect yourself and those around you. Many people are entitled to a free flu jab, including young children and those at the highest risk. You can check your eligibility and book through the NHS website or your GP.
