Being a Good Neighbour in Winter

Hannah Hanson

Hannah Hanson, senior marketing executive

Winter can be hard for everyone.

Cold weather, shorter days, and rising costs can make life stressful, but being a good neighbour can make things easier for you and the people around you. Here are some simple ways to help:

Check in on others

  • Some people find winter lonely or difficult. A quick hello to a neighbour can make a big difference.
  • Knock on the door or send a text to check in on how someone is doing.
  • If you have an older neighbour or someone who lives alone, ask if they need any necessities such as bread or milk.

Share what you can

  • Little things can help a lot. If you have got extra tins of food or warm clothes, offer them to someone who might need them.
  • If you can’t give items, share information about local food banks or warm spaces.

Keep paths safe

  • Snow and ice can cause falls, clear your own path where possible and if you can, help a neighbour with theirs.
  • If you see grit bins nearby, use them to make paths safer for everyone.

Be considerate with noise

  • Cold weather means windows stay shut, so noise can seem louder indoors.
  • Keep music and TV at a reasonable level.
  • If you’re having friends over, let neighbours know and keep it quiet after 11pm.

Share useful information

  • Not everyone knows where to get help.
  • Tell neighbours about local warm spaces, food banks, or community events.
  • Share phone numbers for emergency services or housing support.

Why it matters

Being a good neighbour doesn’t cost money. A smile, a kind word, or a helping hand can make winter easier for everyone. When we look out for each other, our communities feel safer and friendlier. Even the smallest gesture can brighten someone’s day and make your neighbourhood a better place to live.
