Danny’s budget recipes

Written by Aimee Cavener, marketing advisor

Meet Danny, a 20 year old customer who lives at our Tyneside Foyer service for young people in Newcastle.

Danny is a keen cook and recently showcased his skills on the BBC Three TV show, Hungry for It. Danny says he loves cooking mainly because food is a universal language. It can be used to break down barriers between people.

Try out some of Danny’s easy, budget recipes. Each recipe costs around £2 to £3 depending on serving sizes and what you already have at home.

10 minute noodles

“The key to this recipe is seasoning. Bring a packet of noodles to the boil and add salt, pepper, and the sauce packet. Let them simmer to absorb the flavour. Add onion, chilli, and chicken (if you like). Then, a dash of soy sauce if you have it. Hey presto, a noodle dish on a budget!”

Patatas Bravas

Bring Spain to your kitchen.

“Peel and chop a few potatoes into small cubes. Part boil these, then fry them in salt, pepper, and oil. Add in sliced chorizo. Keep going until the potatoes are cooked. Mix some mayo and sweet chilli sauce for a tasty dressing.”

Fakeaway pizza

You don’t need to order in to enjoy a delicious pizza.

“Spread some tomato puree over a flatbread. Add mozzarella, onion and pepper on top. If you want to, add chorizo from earlier. Pop in the oven for eight to ten minutes and enjoy.”

How to eat well for less

  • Create a food budget, so you don’t over spend
  • Write a weekly meal plan, so you only buy what you need
  • Switch to supermarket's own brand products
  • Make homemade meals like Danny’s, and you can use the leftovers too
  • Remember, bargains are only bargains if they are on your shopping list
