Home Group is set to significantly increase the number of apprentices it recruits.

Around 140 apprenticeship roles will be created during the next 12 months, more than doubling the number of apprenticeship vacancies on offer. Last year, 60 apprenticeships were on offer.

Home Group has long been committed to providing its customers with opportunities to start a new career while both earning and gaining qualifications.

In previous years all apprenticeships have been filled by Home Group customers, however this year some of the vacancies will be available for members of the general public.

Apprenticeships will be available in a variety of roles including customer services, health and social care, office administration, housing, building development and information technology.

Mark Henderson, Home Group chief executive, said: “I firmly believe that every business should employ apprentices. Apprentices bring with them enthusiasm and a desire to learn new skills as they progress in their chosen careers.

“Bringing in people who haven’t previously worked in a specific role also brings with it new ideas. Home Group has benefitted from innovative ideas and new ways of working thanks to us listening to our apprentices, who often have a fresh perspective on things.”

Home Group’s 140 apprenticeship vacancies will be available throughout the UK but the majority of them will be on Tyneside where the company’s headquarters and Customer Service Centre is based.

The apprenticeships have been announced as Home Group was named 33rd best large employer in the UK in the Great Place to Work survey. Home Group was the highest placed employer in any category with a north east headquarters.

Mr Henderson added: “With the naming of Home Group as one of the best places to work in the UK there has never been a better time to join a company which has a very strong social purpose and makes a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people each day.”

Home Group currently has apprentices aged between 17 and 62 and all are paid at least £7.20 per hour – significantly above the minimum wage for apprentices.

Apprenticeships last initially between 12 – 24 months and have the possibility for people to progress onto a degree and master’s degree level.

Home Group’s current apprenticeship programme has also been shortlisted in the Excellence in Employability and Diversity category at the soon to be held CIPD North East Awards 2017, and with the planned growth of the programme, its impact will extend even further over the coming years.
