Customers of one of the UK’s largest affordable housing providers are set to benefit from warmer, more energy efficient homes following a multi-million pound investment.

Home Group is set to spend more than £3m to improve 370 homes in Maryport, Cumbria. The not-for-profit landlord has appointed Mitie Property Services to install external wall insulation on some of its older properties.

Some of the 370 homes will also benefit from improved windows and roofing. Home Group has previously worked with Mitie elsewhere in Cumbria to install external wall insulation to its properties. Customers who have had work completed have reported warmer homes and lower heating bills.

Louise Barkes, Home Group lead maintenance contract manager, said: “As a responsible not-for-profit landlord it’s very important to Home Group that we provide our customers with homes which are energy efficient.

“Some of our customers are economically vulnerable and this scheme will ensure they can get greater value for money when heating their homes and make them more comfortable to live in.

“This multi-million pound investment in Maryport is just one of the many schemes we’ve carried out in West Cumbria with Mitie recently. Apart from benefitting our customers the scheme also benefits the environment by reducing the levels of greenhouse gases used to heat our homes.”

Simon Hodgson, Mitie Commercial Lead, said: “The winning of this flagship scheme compliments the successful finishing of a similar project in Whitehaven for Home Group, which was very successful, improving almost 300 Homes.”

The external wall insulation is mainly carried out on older properties which do not have cavity walls. In addition to helping homes retain heat more efficiently the properties are also rendered improving their appearance and improving the neighbourhood.
