From homelessness to home

We’re delighted to be able to share with you the story of another exceptional customer – 20-year-old Rebecca Clancy.

Rebecca’s journey brought her to Home Group in need of support and housing. Her inspirational story tells a tale of how, with the right support, there is hope to get a life back on track. Rebecca’s spirit and determination is testament to her bravery and strength.

Rebecca is an apprentice administrator based at our Dundee office. It's the end of 2016 and she is settled in her first home, looking forward to Christmas and celebrations with her family.

Sounds like every young person’s dream but Rebecca has come a long way from some of the darkest moments of her young life.

Six months ago, out of work and homeless she was sofa surfing and at one of the lowest points of her life; she was very concerned for her own wellbeing.

She needed help to find a home and luckily through a support worker she applied to Home Group.

Rebecca said: “I was unemployed when I secured my tenancy so Home Group organised decorating vouchers to help me in making this flat a place I can call home.

“I’ve worked since I was 15 but never had a proper long term job. When I signed for my keys I didn’t know about benefits. I had little money but wanted to work.”

Within a month of helping put a roof over her head Home Group told Rebecca about an apprenticeship vacancy. She went through the application process, had an interview and was successful.

“I had been out of work for several months and felt almost intimidated at the concept of working in an office but everyone made me feel immediately welcome.

“Home Group has supplied me with the means to independently support myself. I’m learning every day, working in a brand new environment with new challenges and chances to prove myself.”

Rebecca is working towards a Level three in business and administration.

“I feel overwhelmed at the difference Home Group has made and at how much I have to learn but the guidance from my colleagues is invaluable.

“I’m gaining an insight into the work that goes on by Home Group to support tenants, appreciating the number of people required to provide the level of service that we give to our customers.

“The stability that Home Group has given me, not only in finding a home but also employment, is something I am incredibly grateful for and pushes me to work as hard as I can and learn as much as possible in the hope that one day I will have helped, even in just one small way, a future customer in the same way Home Group helped me.”
