Meet Liz Gibney, Home Group's Head of Place

How long have you been with Home Group?

I’ve been with Home Group for just over two years now. Previously, I worked as an architect and I was also involved in the launch of an arts and community charity in Dover which was designed to bring communities together through art.

What does your role involve?

I oversee all aspects of design for Home Group, which goes beyond building design and also looks at the design of community spaces and responding to an area’s history and current characteristics. Additionally, we are increasingly considering our supported housing offer as part of our wider place making initiatives to bring homes for life into mixed tenure communities.

What’s your biggest achievement so far with Home Group?

I think my biggest achievement is probably how we have raised awareness throughout the organisation about the value of good design, and the fact that it goes beyond building design.

One moment that really stands out was how one person contacted us in response to our design plans to offer us his piece of land. He was so impressed with our response to the area he was keen to see his land play a part in that.

What’s your ambition for Home Group and how will you influence it?

I’m super ambitious! I want Home Group to win a top award for every scheme that we build, and to be known for building the best homes in the UK.

What does a home mean to you?

For me, a home is so much more than the house. Where I live, what makes it my home is walking my dog in the valley, or sitting on the doorstep and taking in the views. It’s everything around me and how I use the space that makes it feel like home.

What are you most excited about in terms of future housing developments/ design?

Probably new methods of construction including off-site manufacture and new technology.

Why Home Group?

For me, Home Group allows me to see a project through from start to finish. Often in architecture, you can hand your plans over to the client and that’s as far as your involvement might go. But at Home Group, I can play a part right the way through the process, meaning that design is integral every step of the way.
