How do we solve the UK’s housing crisis? It’s a question that’s vexed the housing sector and successive governments for years. But it’s the wrong question.

Rather than a single housing crisis, the country faces several housing crises, each with its own distinct causes, consequences and remedies.

Tackling the UK’s housing problems starts by recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach is destined to fail.

The housing issues facing Newcastle or Liverpool, for example, are not the same as those of London and the South East. And the policy prescriptions needed to tackle London’s lack of affordability won’t help the North, where house prices are already 40% lower than elsewhere in the country.
