Great Exhibition of the North

After a successful bid, 2018 sees NewcastleGateshead hosting the prestigious Great Exhibition of the North (GEOTN). We’re delighted to be part of this celebration of art, design and innovation with our Gateshead Innovation Village.

The original North Exhibition was in 1929 and aimed to boost economy and quality of life in the North. Home Group, which was then named North East Housing Association, was formed in 1935 sharing the same aspirations. Rather than asking what progress has been made since then, we asked what the future of housing might look like, which has resulted in the pioneering Gateshead Innovation Village.

Gateshead Innovation Village is a live research project led by Home Group that will test the benefits and durability of a wide range of modular homes and smart tech during the Great Exhibition of the North. The site will identify dynamic new solutions to tackle the housing crisis, whilst the research results will offer the sector greater confidence in utilising modern methods of construction at scale, and challenge public perceptions of modular homes.

Gateshead Innovation Village can be found just off the Get North Innovation walking trail. The development will comprise 41 homes for affordable rent, and house types will include volumetric, panelised and a small number of traditional builds. The first modular home is due to be delivered to the site in August.

You can also catch us at the Great North Museum where we'll be sponsoring This Kingdom Called Home. You can see a model of the Innovation Village which embraces the innovative spirit of Get North and showcases the layout and different types of modular homes on the site. You can also view an augmented reality version of one of our modular homes in detail.

#GetNorth2018 is a really exciting, free event which will last all summer and we can’t wait to showcase Gateshead Innovation Village to the region. Find out more about the Great Exhibition of the North.
