Help is now available for victims of domestic violence in Barrow

Stonham runs the South Cumbria Domestic Violence Floating Support team which visits women in their homes giving practical and emotional help and advice.

It began in October last year and is currently a pilot project for 12 months. The service recently received press coverage from the North West Evening Mail.

Service Manager, Dawn Sandham, said: “Many women have come to us following years of being in bad relationships where their former partner has totally controlled their lives. This means the women are often really lacking in self-confidence and esteem.

“Once they are living in safe accommodation we visit them on a weekly basis to provide help with things like budgeting, how to pay utility bills and introducing them to social groups where they can make new friends. Our service is open to any women aged over 16 years-old and is totally discreet and confidential.”

Domestic violence represents 14% of all reported violent crime in Cumbria and the service currently has increased capability to help more women and their children escape violent partners.
