Home is building over 1,000 new homes - replacing older, non-traditional housing - on the Scowerdons, Weakland, and Newstead (SWaN) estates, which are situated in the south east of the city.
The organisation, in partnership with Sheffield City Council, is aiming to achieve 50% affordable homes across the entire regeneration scheme.
In the first phase at Newstead, Home is building three apartments, three bungalows and 50 two to four-bedroom houses. Earlier this year Home began the seven-year building programme at Weakland - and will shortly begin marketing those properties for sale. The planning applications for the first two phases of the Scowerdons estate were submitted in July.
Home’s Project Director, Stuart Massey, said: “In total, we are building 312 new homes at Newstead in five phases and we expect the houses in the first phase to be completed and be ready to move into by spring 2009.
“Home is hoping to attract not only people who already live or have lived in Newstead in the past, but other people, including young professionals and families from other parts of the city, to the new development
“Newstead has magnificent views across the city, good local amenities, such as the Crystal Peaks shopping centre, and a tram stop on the doorstep, so we expect demand for the new properties to be high.”
Councillor Bob McCann, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Safer, Sustainable Communities, said: “I’m delighted that we are now seeing real progress on this site. Local people have been very patient while we have gone through all the planning and preparation stages. It’s great that they can now look forward to new high quality affordable housing.”
As well as being the largest regeneration project in Sheffield, the scheme also has the benefit of a residents’ charter. The charter promises to make sure that a new home, with a choice of whether to buy or rent, is available for former and existing residents who wish to return to the redeveloped estates.
