Home operates throughout England and Scotland and offers housing to a wide range of people.
Most of our housing is general needs, however we do have some specialist units available, such as housing for older people, and foyer projects for young adults.
Different areas of the country have different needs and therefore the criteria for being housed can vary. We allocate our properties according to need and time on a waiting list, to ensure people are assessed fairly and given the right priority, for this we use a banding system.
We house people that apply directly to Home, and people nominated by local authorities. Most local authority areas we operate in have nomination rights. This means that the local authority puts forward applicants to be housed in our properties. Percentages can vary from 50% to 100% and is determined by the demand in any given area. For example in the south east and London the demand for housing is very high so often these areas are 100% local authority nomination rights, and therefore we can not accept direct applications in these areas. In such circumstances applicants will have to apply directly to the local authority.
Some local authorities operate common housing registers, or choice-based
lettings. Where this is the case the local office will advise you how to apply for housing.
Applicants eligible for housing must:
- be over 18 years old or 16 and 17 with a guarantor
- be in housing need (for example homeless, overcrowded, moving to take up employment etc)
- have permanent residence in the UK either holding a British passport or granted indefinite or limited leave to remain. Those subject to certain immigration restrictions are not eligible.
